There's a point where buying sockets one set at a time stops making sense. If you work on several vehicles, run a small shop or are filling an empty tool chest, a large socket set gets you every drive and size in one purchase, usually for less than piecing it together.
Big piece counts can mislead, though. A 300-piece kit might include 100 driver bits and 40 hex keys, while a 222-piece socket-only set gives you far more sockets. What matters is the size coverage in each drive, whether the sockets are standard and deep, whether they're chrome or impact, and where you'll put it all.
We compared six of the biggest current kits from Sunex, GearWrench, Tekton, DEWALT and Craftsman using manufacturer contents and specs.

The Best Large Socket Sets, Reviewed
1. Sunex 10222 222-Piece Master Impact Set: Best Overall
Who it's for: anyone with cordless impacts who wants one set to cover nearly every socket and bit job.
Nearly everything in the 10222 is a socket or bit socket, which is why it covers so much. In 1/4-inch drive you get standard and deep 6-point sockets from 3/16" to 7/16" and 4 to 12 mm. In 3/8-inch drive, standard and deep from 5/16" to 3/4" and 8 to 19 mm, plus Torx T20 to T55, E-Torx E5 to E16, stubby triple square M4 to M16, tamperproof Torx T10H to T50H, and long, stubby and standard hex bits in SAE and metric. In 1/2-inch drive, standard and deep from 13/16" to 1-1/2" and 20 to 30 mm, plus long hex bits.
You also get impact extensions in all three drives (up to 15" in 3/8-inch), a universal joint per drive and three adapters. Sunex lists 16 adjustable socket rails for storage. It's all chrome-molybdenum with a black phosphate finish, radius corners and laser-plus-stamped markings, with a lifetime warranty.
Pros
- Standard and deep impact sockets in three drives
- Torx, E-Torx, triple square and hex bits included
- Adjustable rails for drawer storage
Cons
- 1/2-inch drive starts at 20 mm and 13/16", so lug-nut sizes like 17 and 19 mm are only in 3/8-inch drive
- No ratchets

2. GearWrench 89072 209-Piece Master Impact Set: Best Impact Size Range
Who it's for: home shops and mechanics who want impact sockets in every drive, up to the larger sizes.
The 89072 includes standard and deep impact sockets in 1/4-, 3/8- and 1/2-inch drive, with an overall range of 3/16" to 1-1/2" and 4 to 36 mm. The 1/4-inch drive part runs 3/16" to 9/16" and 4 to 15 mm, which suits cordless ratchets and impact drivers with an adapter. The 36 mm top end covers many front axle nuts.
Impact extensions, universal joints and adapters are included. GearWrench uses chrome-molybdenum impact-grade steel with black oxide on the 3/8- and 1/2-inch sockets and manganese phosphate on the 1/4-inch sockets and accessories. At about 79 lb, plan on a drawer, not a shelf. GearWrench lists a full lifetime warranty.
Pros
- Metric to 36 mm, SAE to 1-1/2"
- Standard and deep in all three drives
- Full lifetime warranty
Cons
- About 79 lb
- No bit sockets

3. Tekton SHD91222 102-Piece 3/8" Set: Best Single-Drive Set
Who it's for: hand-tool users who want the most complete 3/8-inch drive coverage possible.
Instead of spreading across drives, Tekton goes deep on 3/8-inch: 6-point chrome sockets from 1/4" to 1" and 6 to 24 mm, in shallow, semi-deep and deep lengths. Semi-deep sockets are the ones most kits lack; they reach over short studs while staying short enough for tight spaces.
Everything rides on rails and trays (Tekton says rails and trays are made in the USA, sockets in Taiwan). There's no ratchet, so it pairs with whatever 3/8-inch ratchet you prefer. Tekton's own listing has shown the set as coming soon, while retailers list it, so check availability.
Pros
- 1/4" to 1" and 6 to 24 mm in three lengths
- Semi-deep sockets included
- Drawer-ready rails and trays
Cons
- 3/8-inch drive only
- No ratchet or extensions

Who it's for: people who want a big socket kit and care most about ratchet feel in tight spaces.
DEWALT's TOUGHSERIES ratchets use a 144-tooth dual-pawl design with a 2.5° swing, the finest in this group, plus quick-release heads. The kit counts 106 sockets: 30 in 1/4-inch drive, 40 in 3/8-inch and 36 in 1/2-inch, all 6-point and in both standard and deep lengths.
The rest of the 242 pieces are 10 combination wrenches, 17 hex and Torx bit sockets, three spark plug sockets, nine extensions, three universal joints, 28 hex keys and a bit driver with bits. DEWALT doesn't publish a complete size list online, so check the listing images if you need a specific size. DEWALT lists a full lifetime warranty.

It includes ratchets and 6- and 12-point sockets in three drives, plus combination wrenches, 72-tooth ratcheting wrenches, flex-head ratcheting wrenches that tilt up to 180°, reversible ratcheting wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers and S2 hex and ball-end hex bit sockets. Large Socket Set Buying Guide
Count Sockets, Not Pieces
The number on the box includes ratchets, extensions, adapters, hex keys, bits and sometimes rails. Compare the socket list instead. For example, the Craftsman CMMT45939 has 308 pieces and 136 standard and deep sockets, while the DEWALT DWMT45417 has 242 pieces and 106 sockets.
Coverage by Drive
A big set should cover each drive in the sizes that drive is good for: about 4 to 14 mm in 1/4-inch, 8 to 19 mm or more in 3/8-inch, and 10 to 24 mm or more in 1/2-inch, with matching SAE ranges. Watch for split ranges, like the Sunex 10222, whose 1/2-inch metric sockets start at 20 mm, so 17 and 19 mm lug nuts need the 3/8-inch sockets or an adapter. Our best socket set guide explains ideal ranges by drive.
Chrome or Impact
Impact sets (Sunex 10222, GearWrench 89072) work on impact tools and by hand. Chrome sets are slimmer and lighter, better for tight spaces with hand ratchets. If you own cordless impacts, an impact master set is the more versatile purchase. See our impact socket set guide.
Ratchets Included or Not
Socket-only impact sets don't include ratchets. Mixed kits do, and ratchet quality varies: 72-tooth (5° swing) in the Craftsman, 90-tooth (4°) in the GearWrench 89060, and 144-tooth (2.5°) in the DEWALT.
Weight and Storage
Large sets are heavy: GearWrench lists about 79 lb for the 89072 and about 168 lb for the 89060. Rails, trays and drawer boxes are far easier to work from than blow-molded cases. Plan space in a rolling tool chest, and consider drawer liners and socket organizers to keep everything in place.
When You Need Even Bigger
If your work goes beyond 1-1/2" or 36 mm, you're into 3/4-inch drive. Our 3/4" drive socket set guide covers those.
Is Bigger Always Better?
Not if you don't use the sizes. For occasional car maintenance, a strong 3/8-inch set and a 1/2-inch set cover nearly everything, cost less and take up one drawer. Big kits pay off when you work on varied vehicles or equipment, or when you're filling a chest from scratch.
How We Chose
We compared the largest current socket and mechanics kits from Sunex, GearWrench, Tekton, DEWALT and Craftsman using each manufacturer's published contents and specs: socket counts by drive, SAE and metric ranges, standard, semi-deep and deep lengths, chrome or impact construction, included ratchets and their tooth counts, bit sockets, storage, catalog weight and listed warranty. We prioritized real socket coverage over piece count. We also considered recurring owner feedback, such as heavy cases and missing sizes. We did not test these kits ourselves.
FAQ
What is the biggest socket set you can buy?
Among mainstream brands, GearWrench's 613-piece 89060 master set is one of the largest single kits, though it includes wrenches, pliers and screwdrivers as well as sockets. For a socket-focused kit, the Sunex 222-piece 10222 impact set and DEWALT's 242-piece DWMT45417 are among the biggest.
Is a massive socket set worth it?
If you'll actually use the sizes, yes: buying one large set usually costs less than buying the same sockets in several smaller sets. If you only do occasional maintenance, a well-chosen 3/8-inch set plus a 1/2-inch set is more practical and easier to store.
Why does piece count not equal socket count?
Piece counts include everything in the box: ratchets, extensions, adapters, bits, hex keys and sometimes rails. A 300-piece kit can have fewer sockets than a 200-piece socket-only set, so compare the socket list, not the number on the box.
Should a big socket set be impact or chrome?
If you own impact tools, an impact set is more versatile because impact sockets also work by hand. If you only use hand ratchets, chrome sockets are slimmer, lighter and fit tighter spaces.
Where should I store a large socket set?
In a tool chest or rolling cabinet, ideally on rails or in foam. Big sets in blow-molded cases are hard to work from. Plan drawer space before you buy, especially for kits that weigh 50 to 170 pounds.
Verdict
The Sunex 10222 is the best large socket set for most people with impact tools: standard and deep impact sockets in three drives plus Torx, E-Torx, triple square and hex bits on adjustable rails. The GearWrench 89072 reaches further, to 36 mm and 1-1/2", and the GearWrench 89060 is the pick if you're filling an empty chest with sockets, wrenches and hand tools in one go.
