Most people never need a 3/4-inch drive socket. Then they buy a diesel pickup, a tractor or a skid steer, and suddenly the biggest socket in the 1/2-inch drawer is a size too small. A 3/4 drive socket set is the step up for fasteners above about 1-1/2 inches (38 mm), and for jobs where a 1/2-inch drive tool is working at its limit.
The best 3/4 drive socket set depends first on how you'll turn it. If you'll use a breaker bar and ratchet, a chrome hand-tool set with handles included makes sense. If you have or plan to buy a 3/4-inch impact wrench, buy impact sockets, which also work fine by hand. After that, it's SAE vs metric, standard vs deep, and how much weight you can store.
We compared current 3/4-inch drive sets from GearWrench and Sunex using manufacturer size lists and specs.

The Best 3/4" Drive Socket Sets, Reviewed
1. GearWrench 80880 27-Piece 3/4" Drive SAE Set: Best Hand-Tool Set
Who it's for: farm, fleet and truck owners who turn big fasteners by hand and want everything in one metal box.
This is a complete 3/4-inch drive kit, not just sockets. GearWrench includes a quick-release ratchet, a breaker bar, a T-handle, three extensions and 21 chrome 12-point sockets: 7/8", 15/16", 1", then every 1/16" step to 1-1/2", followed by 1-5/8", 1-11/16", 1-3/4", 1-13/16", 1-7/8", 2", 2-1/8", 2-3/16", 2-1/4" and 2-3/8". It all fits in a metal hand box at 26.4 lb.
Two trade-offs. The sockets are 12-point, which engage faster but grip less securely on rusty hex nuts than 6-point. And the ratchet has 24 teeth, which means about 15° of swing, so you need room to move the handle. That's normal for 3/4-inch ratchets, where strength matters more than fine indexing. GearWrench lists a full lifetime warranty.
Pros
- Ratchet, breaker bar, T-handle and extensions included
- 21 sockets up to 2-3/8"
- Metal storage box
Cons
- 12-point sockets only
- Chrome, not for impact wrenches
- No metric sizes

2. GearWrench 84035 29-Piece 3/4" Drive SAE Impact Set: Best SAE Impact Set
Who it's for: owners of heavy trucks, trailers and American-built equipment with a 3/4-inch impact wrench or a breaker bar.
The 84035 is about as complete as a standard-length SAE 3/4 inch socket set gets. GearWrench lists 29 sockets in every 1/16" step from 3/4" to 2-1/2" (19.05 to 63.50 mm), with no skipped sizes. They're 6-point chrome-molybdenum impact sockets with off-corner loading to reduce rounding and a manganese phosphate finish for corrosion resistance.
Each socket has a pin hole for pin and O-ring retention, plus laser-etched and hard-stamped size markings. The set comes in a blow-molded case and weighs 49.4 lb. There are no handles, so you'll need an impact wrench, a 3/4-inch breaker bar or a ratchet. GearWrench lists a full lifetime warranty.
Pros
- 29 sizes from 3/4" to 2-1/2" with no gaps
- 6-point Cr-Mo impact sockets
- Pin hole for secure retention
Cons
- No ratchet or breaker bar
- Nearly 50 lb

by GEARWRENCH
3. GearWrench 84031 26-Piece 3/4" Drive Metric Impact Set: Best Metric Impact Set
Who it's for: anyone maintaining imported tractors, construction equipment or metric heavy trucks.
GearWrench's metric 3/4-inch impact set covers every size from 19 to 36 mm, then 38, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 46 and 50 mm. That's 26 sockets that cover the metric sizes you're most likely to meet on large equipment, without the gaps that cheaper sets leave above 30 mm.
The construction matches the SAE set: 6-point Cr-Mo, off-corner loading, manganese phosphate finish, pin holes for retention and dual size markings, in a blow-molded case. At 30.8 lb it's notably lighter than the SAE set, because the largest socket is 50 mm (about 1.97") rather than 2-1/2". GearWrench lists a full lifetime warranty.
Pros
- Gap-free 19 to 36 mm
- Adds the common larger sizes up to 50 mm
- Lighter than the SAE set
Cons
- Skips 37, 39, 45 and 47 to 49 mm
- No handles included

by GEARWRENCH
4. Sunex 4692 26-Piece 3/4" Drive Metric Impact Set: Best Value Metric
Who it's for: buyers who want a metric 3/4 socket set from a company best known for impact sockets.
Sunex lists 26 standard-length 6-point impact sockets from 19 to 50 mm, forged from chrome-molybdenum alloy steel. Its radius corner design applies force to the flats rather than the corners, which helps reduce rounding and wear, and each socket has both laser-etched and stamped size markings, so you can still read the size after the laser marking wears.
Sunex doesn't publish a full size list or weight for the 4692 on its product page, so check the listing photos if you need a particular odd size above 36 mm. If you prefer deep sockets, Sunex's 4693 is a 26-piece deep version over the same 19 to 50 mm range.
Pros
- 19 to 50 mm range in 26 sockets
- Dual laser and stamped markings
- Deep version available (4693)
Cons
- Full size list and weight not published by Sunex
- No handles

by SUNEX
5. Sunex 4683 17-Piece 3/4" Drive SAE Heavy-Duty Set: Best Compact SAE
Who it's for: truck and equipment owners who need the core big sizes without a 50-pound case.
Sunex's 4683 covers 1" to 2" in 17 sockets, which works out to every 1/16" step in that range (25.40 to 50.80 mm). That skips the smaller 3/4" to 15/16" sizes, which most people already have in 1/2-inch drive, and stops at 2", which is enough for many applications short of the largest axle nuts.
It's labeled heavy-duty, made from Cr-Mo alloy steel with Sunex's radius corner design and dual laser and stamped markings. A metric heavy-duty counterpart, the 4684, is also available.
Pros
- Every 1/16" from 1" to 2"
- Smaller, lighter set than full 29-piece kits
- Metric twin available (4684)
Cons
- Nothing below 1" or above 2"
- Weight not published

by SUNEX
6. GearWrench 84037 29-Piece 3/4" Drive SAE Deep Impact Set: Best Deep Set
Who it's for: anyone removing axle nuts, hub nuts or nuts on long studs where a standard socket bottoms out.
The 84037 is the deep version of the 84035, with the same 29 sizes from 3/4" to 2-1/2" in 1/16" steps. The sockets are 6-point Cr-Mo with off-corner loading, pin holes for retention, manganese phosphate finish and dual markings. GearWrench lists the set at 72.6 lb, so it needs a sturdy shelf or drawer.
If you can only afford one 3/4-inch impact set and work on a lot of studs and recessed nuts, deep covers more jobs than standard. If clearance is tight, standard sockets win.
Pros
- Deep sockets in every 1/16" from 3/4" to 2-1/2"
- 6-point Cr-Mo construction
- Full lifetime warranty per GearWrench
Cons
- 72.6 lb
- Deep sockets can be too long in tight spaces

3/4 Drive Socket Set Buying Guide
Do You Actually Need 3/4" Drive?
A 1/2-inch drive covers sockets up to about 1-1/2" or 36 mm in most sets. Step up to 3/4 drive when your fasteners go beyond that, or when you're regularly loading a 1/2-inch breaker bar to its limit. The 3/4-inch drive square itself measures 19.05 mm, half again as big as a 1/2-inch square (12.7 mm). Our socket size chart shows typical size ranges for each drive.
Drive sizes compared, to scale
- Drive square
- 1/4" = 6.35 mm
- Typical SAE sockets
- 5/32" to 9/16"
- Typical metric sockets
- 4 to 15 mm
Interior trim, sensors, small engine covers, electronics. The small head reaches behind dashboards, and the short handle keeps you from overtightening small bolts.
- Drive square
- 3/8" = 9.525 mm
- Typical SAE sockets
- 1/4" to 1"
- Typical metric sockets
- 6 to 19 mm (some sets to 22 mm)
Most engine-bay work, brakes and accessories. If you buy one drive size first, this is the one.
- Drive square
- 1/2" = 12.7 mm
- Typical SAE sockets
- 3/8" to 1-1/2"
- Typical metric sockets
- 10 to 36 mm
Lug nuts, suspension, axle and frame bolts. The standard drive for breaker bars and most impact wrenches.

- 3/4" to 2-1/2"
- Typical metric sockets
- 19 to 50 mm
Trucks, farm and heavy equipment, big axle nuts. Not needed for a passenger car.
Square sizes are exact (1 in = 25.4 mm). Socket ranges are typical of current sets on the market, not a standard, so check each set's size list. Source: our socket size chart.
Chrome or Impact
Chrome sets like the GearWrench 80880 are made for hand tools and usually include handles. Impact sets are designed for impact wrenches but work by hand too, which makes them the more flexible choice if you'll ever own a 3/4-inch impact. Never put chrome sockets on an impact wrench. Our impact socket set guide explains the difference in steel and design.
SAE or Metric
Large SAE and metric sizes rarely line up. For example, 1-1/2" is 38.10 mm (0.10 mm larger than a 38 mm socket), 1-5/8" is 41.28 mm and 2" is 50.80 mm. Only a few pairs are close enough to swap in a pinch, like 1-13/16" (46.04 mm) and 46 mm. Buy the system your equipment uses, or both.
| SAE size | Exact mm | Nearest metric |
|---|---|---|
| 1-1/16" | 26.99 | 27 mm (0.01 mm larger) |
| 1-1/8" | 28.58 | 29 mm (0.43 mm larger) |
| 1-1/4" | 31.75 | 32 mm (0.25 mm larger) |
| 1-5/16" | 33.34 | 33 mm (0.34 mm smaller) |
| 1-3/8" | 34.93 | 35 mm (0.08 mm larger) |
| 1-1/2" | 38.10 | 38 mm (0.10 mm smaller) |
| 1-5/8" | 41.28 | 41 mm (0.28 mm smaller) |
| 1-13/16" | 46.04 | 46 mm (0.04 mm smaller) |
| 2" | 50.80 | 51 mm (0.20 mm larger) |
| 2-1/2" | 63.50 | No common metric match |
All conversions use 1 in = 25.4 mm. Anything more than about 0.10 mm apart is likely to slip on a tight fastener, which is a real risk at the torque levels 3/4-inch tools reach.
Standard vs Deep
Deep sockets reach axle nuts and nuts on long studs. Standard sockets fit where clearance is tight and weigh less. A 3/4-inch deep SAE set can weigh nearly 50% more than the standard version, as the GearWrench 84035 (49.4 lb) and 84037 (72.6 lb) show.
6-Point vs 12-Point
6-point sockets are the safer choice for high-torque work and rusty fasteners. 12-point sockets, like those in the 80880, engage faster and fit 12-point fasteners. On big impact work, stick with 6-point. More in our 6-point vs 12-point guide.
Don't Stretch a 1/2-Inch Impact with Adapters
It's tempting to run 3/4-inch sockets on a 1/2-inch impact wrench with a step-up adapter. It works for occasional light jobs, but the 1/2-inch anvil and the adapter become the weak link, and every adapter adds flex and wobble. If you regularly need 3/4-inch sockets, a 3/4-inch tool is the safer setup.
Handles and Accessories
Impact socket sets rarely include handles. Budget for a 3/4-inch breaker bar, a ratchet, or a 3/4-inch impact wrench. Impact extensions, universal joints and adapters are sold separately; Sunex, for example, sells a 5-piece 3/4" and 1" drive adapter and universal joint set (4405).
Weight and Storage
These sets are heavy, from about 26 lb for the 80880 to over 72 lb for the 84037. Blow-molded cases work for storage, but socket rails or a dedicated drawer are easier to work from. If you need even bigger kits, see our upcoming large socket set guide.
How We Chose
We compared current 3/4-inch drive socket sets from GearWrench and Sunex using each manufacturer's published contents and specs: every included size, standard or deep length, 6- or 12-point design, steel and finish, retention features, included handles, catalog weight and listed warranty. We favored complete, gap-free size runs and impact-rated construction. We also considered recurring owner feedback on case durability and weight. We did not test these sets ourselves; where a brand doesn't publish a spec, we say so.
FAQ
What is a 3/4 inch drive socket set used for?
Large fasteners that need more torque than 1/2-inch drive can safely handle: truck and trailer wheels, axle and hub nuts, suspension and frame bolts on heavy trucks, farm equipment and construction machinery. Typical sets cover about 3/4 to 2-1/2 inches or 19 to 50 mm.
Do I need a 3/4 drive socket set for my pickup?
Usually not for routine work on light-duty pickups, where a good 1/2-inch drive set covers lug nuts and most suspension bolts. A 3/4-inch drive set earns its keep on heavy-duty trucks, axle nuts above about 1-1/2 inches or 38 mm, and equipment with very large fasteners.
Can I use 3/4 drive impact sockets with a breaker bar?
Yes. Impact sockets work with hand tools like breaker bars and ratchets, so an impact set is the more versatile purchase. The reverse is not true: chrome hand sockets should not be used on impact wrenches.
Should a 3/4 socket set be SAE or metric?
Match your equipment. American heavy trucks, trailers and much US farm equipment often use SAE fasteners, while imported equipment and many newer machines use metric. If you work on both, buy two sets, because large SAE and metric sizes rarely line up closely enough to swap.
Why are 3/4 drive socket sets so heavy?
The sockets have thick walls to handle high torque, and the sizes are large. GearWrench lists its 29-piece 3/4-inch SAE impact set at about 49 lb and its 29-piece deep version at about 73 lb, so check the weight and plan storage before you buy.
Verdict
If you turn big fasteners by hand, the GearWrench 80880 is the best 3/4 drive socket set because it includes the ratchet, breaker bar and T-handle you'd otherwise buy separately. If you have or want a 3/4-inch impact wrench, the GearWrench 84035 (SAE) or 84031 (metric) gives you complete, 6-point impact coverage. For everything below 1-1/2", our best socket set picks are the better tools.
