At some point, a socket set in a blow-molded case and a toolbox on the shelf stops working. You spend more time hunting for the 10 mm than using it. A rolling tool chest fixes that: every tool in a shallow drawer, visible at a glance, on casters so you can roll it to the car instead of walking back and forth.

The best rolling tool chest for your garage depends on width, drawer strength and build. Width determines how many tools you can lay flat. Drawer slide ratings decide whether drawers still glide when they're full of sockets. Steel gauge and caster size determine how the cabinet holds up when you roll it fully loaded. Then there are the extras: power strips, locks and liners.

We compared six current rolling cabinets and carts from Craftsman, DEWALT and Sunex using manufacturer specs.

The Best Rolling Tool Chests, Reviewed

1. Craftsman V-Series 41" 11-Drawer Cabinet: Best Overall

Who it's for: serious DIYers who want heavy-duty drawers without a 52-inch footprint.

The V-Series is Craftsman's heavy-duty line, and the 41-inch cabinet gets you most of its strength in a width that fits a typical garage wall. Craftsman rates each drawer at up to 200 lb on full-extension, soft-close, ball-bearing slides, and the cabinet at up to 3,000 lb. That's double the per-drawer rating of many consumer cabinets, which matters once a drawer is full of 1/2-inch sockets.

Construction is 16 to 18 gauge steel with an I-frame, on 6" x 2" suspension-loaded casters, which help it roll over cracks in a garage floor. You get 11 drawers at 21 inches deep, a tubular lock, an embossed top mat, drawer liners and an integrated six-outlet power strip with two USB ports. Craftsman lists a 10-year limited warranty.

Pros

  • 200 lb per drawer, 3,000 lb overall
  • 16 to 18 gauge steel with I-frame
  • Power strip with USB ports

Cons

  • Caster locking not specified by Craftsman
  • 21" depth takes more floor space than shallower cabinets

2. Craftsman V-Series 52" 12-Drawer Cabinet: Best Large Cabinet

Who it's for: owners of several socket sets, wrench sets and power tools who've outgrown a 41-inch cabinet.

The 52-inch V-Series shares the 41-inch model's specs: full-extension, soft-close ball-bearing slides at up to 200 lb per drawer, a 3,000 lb load rating, 16 to 18 gauge I-frame steel, 6" x 2" suspension-loaded casters and a tubular lock. It's also 21 inches deep and includes drawer liners, an embossed top mat and a six-outlet power strip with two USB ports.

The extra 11 inches of width gives each drawer more room to lay out tools flat, and there's one more drawer. That adds up quickly when you're storing long breaker bars, extensions and wrench sets. Craftsman lists a 10-year limited warranty, and it also makes V-Series top chests if you want to add storage on top later; check widths match before buying.

Pros

  • Wider drawers for long tools
  • 200 lb drawers, 3,000 lb rating
  • Same power strip and lock as the 41"

Cons

  • Needs 52" of wall space
  • Heavy to move once loaded

3. Craftsman Premium S2000 41" 9-Drawer Cabinet: Best Value

Who it's for: home mechanics who want a full-size cabinet with power and USB, but don't need V-Series drawer ratings.

The Premium S2000 41-inch cabinet keeps the features people use most. You get nine drawers on soft-close, no-slam slides rated for 100 lb each, a 2,000 lb load rating, an 18 to 20 gauge I-frame, and 6" x 2" over-toe locking casters. A six-outlet power strip with dual USB, a keyed internal lock with two keys, a liner in each drawer and an embossed top mat are included.

Compared with the V-Series, you give up drawer capacity (100 lb vs 200 lb) and some steel thickness. For a typical DIY mechanics set, 100 lb per drawer is enough if you spread heavy items across drawers. Craftsman lists a 10-year limited warranty.

Pros

  • Power strip with USB
  • Over-toe locking casters
  • Liners and top mat included

Cons

  • 100 lb drawer rating
  • Craftsman doesn't call the slides ball-bearing on this model

4. DEWALT DWST37052 37" 5-Drawer Cabinet: Best Mid-Size

Who it's for: DIYers with a mix of hand tools and cordless power tools, and a narrower wall to fill.

DEWALT's 37-inch cabinet has five drawers on full-extension, soft-close, ball-bearing slides, rated 100 to 150 lb depending on the drawer. The casters are rated for 2,000 lb, 6" x 2" with over-toe locks, and the body is 18/20 gauge steel. There's an internal keyed lock, a pre-cut embossed top mat and drawer liners.

What's different is the side storage. DEWALT includes two metal rails that mount to the cabinet and two power tool holsters, so your drill and impact can hang on the side, and it sells charger mounts, bins and hooks separately. Five drawers is fewer than other picks, which means deeper drawers suited to power tools and larger items. DEWALT lists a limited lifetime warranty.

Pros

  • Side rails and power tool holsters included
  • Ball-bearing slides up to 150 lb
  • Over-toe locking casters

Cons

  • Only five drawers
  • No power strip

Rolling Tool Chest Buying Guide

Width and Drawer Count

Width decides how many tools you can store flat. A 26-inch cabinet holds a starter mechanics set. A 37- to 41-inch cabinet holds a full set plus wrenches and specialty tools. A 52-inch cabinet suits a large collection. If you're planning a full wall, see our 72-inch tool chest guide. More drawers at the same width means shallower drawers, which are better for hand tools; fewer drawers means deeper ones, better for power tools.

Drawer Slide Ratings

This is the spec that matters most day to day. A full drawer of 1/2-inch sockets is heavy, and overloaded slides sag and bind. Ratings in this guide run from 100 lb (Craftsman S2000) through 100 to 150 lb (DEWALT) to 200 lb (Craftsman V-Series). Ball-bearing, full-extension slides let you reach the back of the drawer.

Overall Load Rating and Casters

The overall rating is mostly about the frame and casters. Larger casters (6" x 2" on the cabinets here) roll more easily over cracks and cords than small ones. Craftsman's V-Series uses suspension-loaded casters. Locking casters keep the cabinet still while you work. Check that at least two casters lock.

Steel Gauge

Gauge numbers run backward: 16-gauge is thicker than 18 or 20. The Craftsman V-Series uses 16 to 18 gauge, while the S2000 and DEWALT cabinets use 18 to 20 gauge, and the Sunex cart uses 18-gauge. Thicker steel resists dents and flexing when the cabinet is loaded and rolled.

Power, Locks and Liners

A built-in power strip lets you charge batteries and run a light on top. Both Craftsman lines include six outlets plus USB. Locks are usually tubular or keyed internal systems; they deter casual access, not determined theft. Liners protect drawers and stop tools sliding; if your cabinet doesn't include them or you want foam organizers, see our tool chest drawer liner guide.

Rolling Tool Chest With Tools

Some cabinets are sold with a tool set inside. They're convenient, but you rarely get to choose the tools. Often the better route is a cabinet plus a separate set, such as our best mechanic tool set picks. If you want portable storage instead of a cabinet, Milwaukee's 366-piece set ships in PACKOUT drawer boxes on a dolly, which we cover in our Milwaukee mechanic tool set review.

Cabinet, Combo or Cart

A rolling cabinet is the base of most garage setups. A top chest added on top doubles storage without using more floor; see our best tool chest picks. A service cart like the Sunex 8057XTR is a smaller rolling chest you bring to the job.

How We Chose

We compared current rolling tool cabinets and service carts from Craftsman, DEWALT and Sunex using each manufacturer's published specs: width and depth, drawer count, slide type and per-drawer rating, overall load rating, steel gauge, caster size and locking, locks, power strips, included liners and accessories, and listed warranty. We also considered recurring owner feedback patterns, such as drawer slide wear, freight damage and assembly. We did not test these chests ourselves; where a manufacturer doesn't publish a spec, we say so.

FAQ

What size rolling tool chest do I need?

Measure your tools and your floor space. A 26-inch cabinet suits a starter mechanics set and a one-car garage. A 41-inch cabinet holds a full mechanics set plus wrenches and specialty tools. A 52-inch or larger cabinet makes sense once you own multiple socket sets, power tools and a top chest's worth of hand tools.

How much weight should a tool chest on wheels hold?

Look at both the per-drawer slide rating and the overall load rating. Per-drawer ratings of 100 lb are common, 150 to 200 lb is heavy duty. Overall ratings in this guide range from 600 lb for the Sunex cart to 3,000 lb for the Craftsman V-Series cabinets.

Is a rolling tool chest with tools worth it?

Sometimes. Bundled chests save effort, but the included tools are often generic. Many buyers do better choosing a cabinet and a separate mechanics tool set, or a system like Milwaukee's 366-piece set, which comes in PACKOUT drawer boxes on a dolly.

What steel gauge is best for a rolling tool chest?

Lower numbers are thicker. 16-gauge steel is thicker and stiffer than 18- or 20-gauge. Many consumer cabinets mix gauges, using thicker steel in the frame and thinner steel in drawers. The Craftsman V-Series uses 16 to 18 gauge, while the S2000 and DEWALT cabinets use 18 to 20 gauge.

Do I need ball-bearing drawer slides?

Yes, for anything you'll load with sockets and wrenches. Ball-bearing slides open smoothly under weight and extend fully. Friction slides bind and wear quickly. Every pick here except where noted uses ball-bearing or heavy-duty soft-close slides.

Verdict

The Craftsman V-Series CMSTVS4111BK is the best rolling tool chest for most garages: 200 lb ball-bearing drawers, a 3,000 lb rating, 16 to 18 gauge steel and a power strip in a 41-inch width. Go with the 52-inch CMSTVS5212BK if you need more drawer area, the Premium S2000 CMST98260BK if 100 lb drawers are enough, or the DEWALT DWST27042 if space is tight.
