A socket set is the first real tool most people buy, and the one they use most. It's also where cheap kits hide their compromises: a 3/8-inch set that jumps from 17 to 19 mm, a 12-point socket where you needed 6-point, or a ratchet so coarse you can't use it behind an engine cover.
The best socket set for you depends on the drive size you need, but the rules for judging one are the same: complete size coverage with no skipped sizes, 6-point sockets for grip, deep sockets in the common sizes, and a ratchet with enough teeth to work in tight spots. Brand and piece count come after that.
We compared current socket sets from GearWrench, DEWALT, Milwaukee and Craftsman on exactly those points, using each manufacturer's published contents and specs.

The Best Socket Sets, Reviewed
1. GearWrench 80550 57-Piece 3/8" Drive Set: Best Overall
Who it's for: anyone who needs one socket set for car maintenance, home repairs and small engines.
If you only buy one socket set, make it a 3/8" drive set like this. GearWrench lists 6-point standard sockets from 1/4" to 1" and 6 to 19 mm with no skipped sizes, plus deep sockets in SAE and metric. That covers the 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 19 mm fasteners that dominate modern engine bays.
What sets the 80550 apart is the pair of ratchets: a standard-length 90-tooth ratchet and a stubby, both with a 4° swing arc. The stubby is the one you'll reach for behind a radiator or under a dash. You also get extensions and a universal joint, all in a blow-molded case at about 12 lb, with a full lifetime warranty.
Pros
- 6-point standard sockets with no gaps from 6 to 19 mm
- Standard and stubby 90-tooth ratchets
- Deep sockets in SAE and metric
- Full lifetime warranty per GearWrench
Cons
- 3/8" drive only
- Blow-molded case, not a socket rail

2. DEWALT DWMT75049 192-Piece Set: Best Multi-Drive
Who it's for: buyers who want every common socket in three drives without paying for wrenches.
This is the best socket wrench set if you want 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive in one case. DEWALT lists 6-point standard and deep sockets in all three drives: 5/32" to 9/16" and 4 to 14 mm in 1/4" drive, 1/4" to 7/8" and 10 to 21 mm in 3/8" drive, and 7/16" to 1" and 13 to 24 mm in 1/2" drive. Deep sockets in 1/2" drive are rare at this level.
You also get three ratchets, extensions in every drive, universal joints, adapters, three spark plug sockets, hex and Torx bit sockets and two hex key sets. The one gap to note: 3/8" metric skips 20 mm. DEWALT lists a full lifetime warranty.
Pros
- Standard and deep 6-point sockets in all three drives
- Torx and hex bit sockets included
- Full lifetime warranty per DEWALT
Cons
- 3/8" metric skips 20 mm
- Ratchet tooth count not published

3. GearWrench 80550P 56-Piece 120XP Set: Best Fine-Tooth Ratchet
Who it's for: people who regularly work in cramped engine bays and want the smallest swing they can get.
The 80550P is the 80550 with GearWrench's 120XP ratchet, which uses two stacked 60-tooth pawls to give 120 positions and a 3° swing arc. GearWrench itemizes it as 13 standard SAE sockets (1/4" to 1"), 14 standard metric sockets (6 to 19 mm), 11 deep SAE sockets (1/4" to 7/8"), 14 deep metric sockets, one ratchet, two extensions and a universal joint.
You lose the stubby ratchet that comes with the 80550, so this is the better buy if fine ratcheting matters more than handle length.
Pros
- 120XP ratchet with a 3° swing
- Standard and deep sockets in SAE and metric
- Full lifetime warranty per GearWrench
Cons
- One ratchet only, no stubby
- 3/8" drive only

4. Milwaukee 48-22-9486 106-Piece Kit: Best Premium Kit
Who it's for: tool buyers who value daily-use details and want 1/4" and 3/8" drive in one stackable organizer.
This kit combines Milwaukee's 56-piece 3/8" drive set (48-22-9008) and 50-piece 1/4" drive set (48-22-9004) in a PACKOUT Low-Profile Organizer with a clear lid. The sockets have four flat sides on the outside, which keeps them from rolling off a fender and lets you turn one with a wrench when a ratchet won't fit. The 3/8" set covers metric standard and deep sockets from 6 to 19 mm and SAE from 1/4" to 1" in standard length, with deep SAE sockets up to 7/8"; the 1/4" set runs 5/32" to 9/16" and 5 to 15 mm.
Both ratchets are 90-tooth with 4° of swing and a slim head. Each set keeps its removable inner tray for steel tool chest drawers, and Milwaukee backs the sockets and ratchets with its Lifetime Guarantee. We list the kit rather than the standalone 3/8" set because, on Amazon, we only found look-alike sets sold under the 48-22-9008 number. Milwaukee's own kit listing uses part number 48-22-9486T and showed as unavailable when we checked in October 2026.
Pros
- FOUR FLAT anti-roll, wrench-ready sockets
- Standard and deep sockets in 1/4" and 3/8" drive
- Organizer stacks with other PACKOUT storage
Cons
- Premium price, and no 1/2" drive
- Milwaukee's trays fit only its own FOUR FLAT sockets

5. GearWrench 80700D 49-Piece 1/2" Drive Set: Best 1/2" Drive
Who it's for: anyone doing their own tire rotations, brake jobs or suspension work with hand tools.
A 1/2" drive set is your second socket set, and this one covers the jobs that need it. GearWrench lists 12 standard SAE sockets from 7/16" to 1-1/8", 15 standard metric sockets from 10 to 24 mm, eight deep SAE sockets from 1/2" to 15/16" and 10 deep metric sockets from 10 to 19 mm, all 6-point. That includes the 17, 19, 21 and 22 mm sizes common on lug nuts.
You get a 90-tooth ratchet, two extensions and a universal joint in a blow-molded case at about 9 lb. If you'll use an impact wrench instead of a ratchet, skip this and buy an impact socket set.
Pros
- Gap-free metric standard sockets from 10 to 24 mm
- Deep sockets in SAE and metric
- 90-tooth ratchet in 1/2" drive
Cons
- Chrome sockets, not for impact wrenches
- Deep metric stops at 19 mm

6. Milwaukee 48-22-9004 50-Piece 1/4" Set: Best 1/4" Drive
Who it's for: anyone working on interior trim, sensors, small engines or electronics.
A good 1/4" set prevents a lot of stripped small bolts, because the short handle limits how much force you can apply. Milwaukee's contents list shows SAE sockets from 5/32" to 9/16" and metric sockets from 5 to 15 mm, including 5.5 mm, in standard and deep lengths. You also get 3" and 6" extensions, a universal socket and a 90-tooth ratchet with 4° of swing.
Like the 3/8" set, it uses FOUR FLAT sockets and a removable tray for chest storage, with Milwaukee's Lifetime Guarantee.
Pros
- Standard and deep sockets in SAE and metric, including 5.5 mm
- Slim 90-tooth ratchet
- Also sold with the 3/8" set in Milwaukee's 106-piece 48-22-9486 kit
Cons
- Expensive for a 1/4" set
- Metric stops at 15 mm, as most 1/4" sets do

7. Craftsman CMMT12018 40-Piece 3/8" Drive Set: Best Budget
Who it's for: someone who needs a basic socket set for occasional jobs, or a second set for a truck or cabin.
The CMMT12018 covers the essentials in 3/8" drive: 12-point standard SAE sockets from 5/16" to 7/8", deep SAE from 3/8" to 3/4", and metric standard and deep sockets from 10 to 19 mm, plus a 5/8" spark plug socket, a 6" extension and a 72-tooth ratchet. The blow-molded case is sized to fit Craftsman's metal tool boxes, and Craftsman lists a full lifetime warranty.
The big compromise is 12-point sockets. They're quick to engage but more likely to slip on a stuck or rounded fastener. No metric sizes below 10 mm either, so you'll want a 1/4" set for small hardware.
Pros
- Standard and deep sockets in SAE and metric
- Full lifetime warranty per Craftsman
- Budget price
Cons
- 12-point sockets only
- Metric starts at 10 mm

Socket Set Buying Guide
Pick the Drive Size First
The drive size has to match the job. 1/4" drive handles small fasteners up to roughly 9/16" and 14 to 15 mm. 3/8" drive is the workhorse, typically covering 1/4" to 1" and 6 to 19 mm or more; our 3/8" drive socket set guide goes deeper on that size. 1/2" drive handles larger fasteners and more torque. For trucks and heavy equipment, look at our 3/4" drive socket sets. If you're not sure which sizes live where, our socket size chart lays it out.
Check for Skipped Sizes
This is the most common shortcut in budget sets. Before you buy, read the size list and make sure every metric size from 8 to 19 mm is present in 3/8" drive. Even good sets skip a size occasionally, like the DEWALT DWMT75049's missing 20 mm in 3/8" drive. Know the gaps before you need them.
6-Point vs 12-Point
A 6-point socket contacts the flats of the hex and is far less likely to round a tight fastener. A 12-point socket fits on in twice as many positions, which helps in tight spots, and it's required on 12-point bolts. Make your main set 6-point. Our 6-point vs 12-point guide covers the details.
Standard and Deep Sockets
You'll need deep sockets the first time you meet a nut on a long stud. The best socket sets include deep sockets in every size that matters, at least in 3/8" drive. All seven picks here include some deep sockets.
Ratchet Tooth Count
Tooth count sets the minimum swing: 72-tooth needs 5°, 90-tooth needs 4°, GearWrench's 120XP needs 3°, and 144-tooth designs like DEWALT's TOUGHSERIES need 2.5°. If you work in tight engine bays, 90 teeth or more is worth paying for.
Chrome vs Impact Sockets
Every set here is chrome and meant for hand ratchets. If you'll use an impact wrench, buy impact-rated sockets instead. They're designed for the hammering an impact gun delivers.
Case and Storage
Blow-molded cases are fine until a latch breaks. Milwaukee's removable trays and socket rails make it easier to move a set into a tool chest. If you're building a full kit with wrenches, compare against our best mechanic tool set picks, which bundle sockets, wrenches and storage together.
How We Chose
We compared current socket sets from GearWrench, DEWALT, Milwaukee and Craftsman using each manufacturer's published contents and specs: drive size, every socket size included, gaps in the size run, 6- or 12-point design, deep socket coverage, ratchet tooth count and swing, case type and listed warranty. We also looked at recurring owner feedback on mechanic socket sets, such as case latches and missing sizes. We did not test these sets ourselves; specs a manufacturer doesn't publish are marked as such.
FAQ
Should I buy a 3/8 or 1/2 inch socket set first?
Buy 3/8-inch first. It covers most engine-bay fasteners from about 6 to 19 mm with a ratchet small enough for tight spaces. Add a 1/2-inch set when you start doing wheels, suspension or anything that needs a breaker bar.
Are 6-point or 12-point sockets better for a socket wrench set?
For most car and equipment work, 6-point. A 6-point socket grips the flats of the hex and is much less likely to round a tight or rusty fastener. 12-point sockets engage faster in tight spots and are needed on 12-point bolts, so they make a good second set.
Do I need deep sockets?
Yes, at least in 3/8-inch drive. Deep sockets reach nuts threaded far down a stud, such as exhaust, strut and some accessory hardware, where a shallow socket bottoms out on the stud. Most of the sets in this guide include deep sockets in the common sizes.
What is the difference between a socket set and a mechanic tool set?
A socket set is ratchets, sockets and drive accessories like extensions and universal joints. Mechanic socket sets sold as tool sets add combination wrenches, hex keys, screwdrivers or bits. If you already own wrenches, a socket-only set gives you more socket coverage for the money.
Can I use a regular socket set with an impact wrench?
No. Chrome hand sockets aren't built for the repeated hammering of an impact wrench. Use impact-rated sockets, which are typically chrome-molybdenum steel with a black finish, on impact guns.
Verdict
The GearWrench 80550 is the best socket set for most people: 6-point sockets from 6 to 19 mm and 1/4" to 1" with no gaps, deep sockets, and both a standard and a stubby 90-tooth ratchet. If you want all three drives in one case, the DEWALT DWMT75049 is the better buy. Add the GearWrench 80700D when you need 1/2" drive.
