A 3/8-inch set gets you through the engine bay. A 1/2 socket set is what you reach for once the job moves to the wheels: lug nuts, caliper brackets, control arm bolts and anything that needs a breaker bar. The bigger drive square and longer handles let you put real force on a fastener without worrying about snapping a smaller tool.
The best 1/2-inch set has three things: a size range that covers your lug nuts and suspension hardware, deep sockets for nuts on long studs, and enough leverage to break loose a rusted bolt. If you plan to use an impact wrench, the sockets also need to be impact-rated, which changes the shortlist completely.
We compared current 1/2-inch drive sets from Tekton, GearWrench, Sunex and Craftsman using their published size lists and specs.

The Best 1/2" Drive Socket Sets, Reviewed
1. Tekton SKT25301 57-Piece Set: Best Overall
Who it's for: DIYers doing their own tire rotations, brake jobs and suspension work with hand tools.
Most 1/2-inch kits make you buy a breaker bar separately. Tekton includes one with an 18-inch handle, alongside a 90-tooth ratchet with a 4° swing, 3" and 10" extensions and a universal joint. The 10" extension is useful for reaching lug nuts through deep wheel spokes.
The size coverage is just as complete: 11 SAE sockets from 3/8" to 1" and 15 metric sockets from 10 to 24 mm, each in both shallow and deep lengths, for 52 sockets with no skipped sizes. Deep coverage all the way to 24 mm is uncommon and helps on axle and strut hardware. Everything comes in a carrying case.
Pros
- Standard and deep sockets from 10 to 24 mm, no gaps
- 18" breaker bar and 10" extension included
- 90-tooth ratchet with a 4° swing
Cons
- Chrome sockets, not for impact wrenches
- SAE stops at 1"

2. GearWrench 80700P 49-Piece 120XP Set: Best Fine-Tooth Ratchet
Who it's for: anyone who works on suspension and brakes in tight wheel wells where a short swing matters.
The 80700P's ratchet is the reason to buy it. GearWrench's 120XP mechanism uses two stacked 60-tooth pawls for 120 positions and a 3° swing arc, which is fine for a 1/2-inch tool. That helps on caliper bracket bolts and sway bar links where the handle can barely move.
GearWrench lists 12 standard SAE sockets from 7/16" to 1-1/8", 15 standard metric sockets covering every size from 10 to 24 mm, 8 deep SAE sockets from 1/2" to 15/16" and 10 deep metric sockets from 10 to 19 mm, plus two extensions and a universal joint. It comes in a blow-molded case at about 10 lb with a full lifetime warranty. The 80700D is the same socket list with a 90-tooth ratchet if you'd rather save a little.
Pros
- 120XP ratchet with a 3° swing
- Gap-free standard metric from 10 to 24 mm
- SAE to 1-1/8"
Cons
- No breaker bar
- Deep metric stops at 19 mm

3. GearWrench 80715 33-Piece SAE Set: Best SAE Set
Who it's for: owners of older American trucks, trailers, tractors and equipment built with SAE fasteners.
If your fasteners are SAE, this set gives you big sizes that metric-heavy kits skip. GearWrench lists 14 sizes, in both standard and deep lengths: 7/16", 1/2", 9/16", 5/8", 11/16", 3/4", 13/16", 7/8", 15/16", 1", 1-1/16", 1-1/8", 1-1/4" and 1-1/2". That reaches into hub and axle nut territory that usually needs 3/4-inch drive.
It's a full kit, too: a 90-tooth ratchet with a 4° swing, a breaker bar, two extensions and a universal joint in a blow-molded case, at a catalog weight of about 8.6 lb. GearWrench lists a full lifetime warranty.
Pros
- Standard and deep sockets to 1-1/2"
- Breaker bar included
- 90-tooth ratchet
Cons
- No metric sockets
- Skips 1-3/16" and 1-5/16" to 1-7/16"

4. Sunex 2568 43-Piece Master Impact Set: Best Impact Set
Who it's for: owners of a 1/2-inch impact wrench who mostly work on SAE vehicles and equipment.
Sunex specializes in impact sockets, and the 2568 shows it. You get 19 standard and 19 deep 6-point sockets in every 1/16" step from 3/8" to 1-1/2": 3/8", 7/16", 1/2", 9/16", 5/8", 11/16", 3/4", 13/16", 7/8", 15/16", 1", 1-1/16", 1-1/8", 1-3/16", 1-1/4", 1-5/16", 1-3/8", 1-7/16" and 1-1/2". There are no gaps in that run.
The sockets are chrome-molybdenum with a black phosphate finish, radius corners to load the flats instead of the corners, and both laser-etched and roll-stamped size markings. Sunex adds four impact extensions (3", 5", 10" and 15") and a universal joint, all in a heavy-duty case with a lifetime warranty. Impact sockets work with hand ratchets too, so this set also pairs well with a breaker bar. If you work on metric vehicles, Sunex's metric 2569 is the counterpart we cover in our impact socket set guide.
Pros
- Every 1/16" from 3/8" to 1-1/2", standard and deep
- Four extensions up to 15"
- Lifetime warranty per Sunex
Cons
- SAE only
- No ratchet or breaker bar

by SUNEX
5. Craftsman CMMT12030 22-Piece Set: Best Budget
Who it's for: drivers who want a compact kit for roadside tire changes and occasional brake work.
The CMMT12030 keeps things simple: nine metric sockets from 14 to 22 mm, 10 SAE sockets from 3/8" to 15/16", a 120-tooth ratchet, a 5" extension and a universal joint, all 6-point. The 14 to 22 mm range covers the lug nuts on most cars and many light trucks. The gunmetal chrome finish is meant to resist corrosion, and it ships in a compact case with a full lifetime warranty.
It's not a complete 1/2 drive socket set. There are no deep sockets and no metric sizes below 14 mm, so smaller suspension and brake hardware may need your 3/8-inch set. But for a trunk or a second garage, it covers the jobs you're most likely to face.
Pros
- 120-tooth ratchet at a budget price
- Covers common lug-nut sizes
- Compact case
Cons
- No deep sockets
- Metric starts at 14 mm

1/2 Socket Set Buying Guide
When You Need 1/2-Inch Drive
A 1/2 inch socket set takes over where 3/8-inch drive runs out of strength or size. Typical jobs include lug nuts, caliper brackets, control arms, strut mounts, subframe bolts and crank pulleys. If most of your work is under the hood, start with a 3/8" drive socket set and add 1/2-inch drive when the wheels come off. For trucks and heavy equipment with fasteners above about 1-1/2", look at our 3/4" drive socket sets.
Drive sizes compared, to scale
- Drive square
- 1/4" = 6.35 mm
- Typical SAE sockets
- 5/32" to 9/16"
- Typical metric sockets
- 4 to 15 mm
Interior trim, sensors, small engine covers, electronics. The small head reaches behind dashboards, and the short handle keeps you from overtightening small bolts.
- Drive square
- 3/8" = 9.525 mm
- Typical SAE sockets
- 1/4" to 1"
- Typical metric sockets
- 6 to 19 mm (some sets to 22 mm)
Most engine-bay work, brakes and accessories. If you buy one drive size first, this is the one.
- Drive square
- 1/2" = 12.7 mm
- Typical SAE sockets
- 3/8" to 1-1/2"
- Typical metric sockets
- 10 to 36 mm
Lug nuts, suspension, axle and frame bolts. The standard drive for breaker bars and most impact wrenches.
- Drive square
- 3/4" = 19.05 mm
- Typical SAE sockets
- 3/4" to 2-1/2"
- Typical metric sockets
- 19 to 50 mm
Trucks, farm and heavy equipment, big axle nuts. Not needed for a passenger car.
Square sizes are exact (1 in = 25.4 mm). Socket ranges are typical of current sets on the market, not a standard, so check each set's size list. Source: our socket size chart.
Sizes That Matter
Lug nuts are the first sizes to check. On most cars and light trucks they fall between 17 and 22 mm, or 3/4" and 13/16". Brake and suspension hardware often runs from 13 to 24 mm. A gap at 20 or 23 mm is a common shortcut, so read the list. Our socket size chart lists SAE and metric sizes in order with their nearest equivalents.
| Job | Common sizes |
|---|---|
| Lug nuts (cars, light trucks) | 17, 19, 21, 22 mm; 3/4", 13/16" |
| Brake caliper brackets | 13 to 21 mm |
| Suspension and subframe | 15 to 24 mm |
| Axle nuts (many cars) | 30 to 36 mm, often bought separately |
These are typical ranges, not rules. Always check your service manual.
Deep Sockets
A deep socket fits over a stud that sticks out past the nut, which is common on strut tops, U-bolts and some wheel hardware. The Tekton SKT25301 goes deep all the way to 24 mm. The GearWrench 80700P stops at 19 mm deep. If you need more depth in bigger sizes, see our deep socket set guide.
Breaker Bar or Ratchet
A ratchet is for speed, a breaker bar is for force. Using a ratchet as a breaker bar on a seized bolt is the fastest way to strip its pawl. The Tekton SKT25301 and GearWrench 80715 include a breaker bar. With the others, budget for one.
Ratchet Tooth Count
For 1/2-inch drive, tooth count is less critical than for 3/8-inch, but it still helps around wheel wells. 72 teeth means a 5° swing, 90 teeth means 4°, and GearWrench's 120XP needs only 3°. Craftsman lists 120 teeth for the CMMT12030 ratchet.
Chrome or Impact
Chrome sockets are for hand tools. If you have a 1/2-inch impact wrench, buy impact-rated sockets like the Sunex 2568. Impact sockets work with hand tools too, so an impact set is the more flexible purchase if you're torn. Our impact socket set guide covers more options, including metric sets.
Torque Wrench Compatibility
Lug nuts and suspension bolts have torque specs, and the 1/2-inch drive is the standard size for torque wrenches in that range. Any of these sets will work with a 1/2-inch click or digital torque wrench. Use the torque wrench for final tightening only, never for breaking fasteners loose, and follow your vehicle's service manual for values.
SAE or Metric
Most cars sold in the US today use metric fasteners. Older domestic vehicles, trailers and a lot of farm equipment still use SAE. If you work on both, a mixed set like the Tekton or GearWrench 80700P is the safer buy.
How We Chose
We compared current 1/2-inch drive socket sets from Tekton, GearWrench, Sunex and Craftsman using each manufacturer's published contents and specs: every socket size included, skipped sizes, deep socket coverage, 6- or 12-point design, ratchet tooth count, included breaker bars and extensions, impact rating, storage and listed warranty. We also considered common owner feedback patterns for 1/2-inch kits, such as missing lug-nut sizes and the lack of a breaker bar. We did not test these sets ourselves; specs a manufacturer doesn't publish are left out.
FAQ
What is a 1/2 inch socket set used for?
Larger fasteners that need more torque than 3/8-inch drive should handle: lug nuts, brake caliper brackets, suspension and subframe bolts, axle nuts on many cars, and most work with a breaker bar or a 1/2-inch impact wrench.
What sizes should a 1/2 drive socket set have?
At minimum, 10 to 24 mm and 7/16 to 1 inch in standard length, with deep sockets in the common sizes. Lug nuts on most cars and light trucks fall between 17 and 22 mm or 3/4 and 13/16 inch, so make sure those are covered in both lengths.
Do I need a breaker bar with a 1/2 socket set?
If you'll loosen lug nuts, axle nuts or rusted suspension bolts by hand, yes. A breaker bar gives you leverage without loading the ratchet mechanism. The Tekton SKT25301 and GearWrench 80715 include one.
Can I use a 1/2 socket wrench set with an impact wrench?
Only if the sockets are impact-rated. Chrome sockets like those in the Tekton, GearWrench and Craftsman sets here are for hand tools. For an impact wrench, use an impact set such as the Sunex 2568.
Is 1/2 or 3/8 drive better for a first socket set?
Start with 3/8-inch drive, which covers most engine-bay work. Add a 1/2-inch set when you start doing wheels, brakes and suspension, or when you buy a 1/2-inch impact wrench.
Verdict
The Tekton SKT25301 is the best 1/2 socket set for most DIYers, with standard and deep sockets from 10 to 24 mm and an 18-inch breaker bar in the box. Choose the GearWrench 80700P if a 3° ratchet swing matters more than a breaker bar, and the Sunex 2568 if you'll run your sockets on an impact wrench.
