Some bolts don't line up with anything. They're tucked behind an exhaust manifold, angled on a transmission bellhousing or buried under a bracket where a straight ratchet and extension can't follow. A swivel socket set solves that by putting a universal joint right at the socket, so the drive tool can sit off to the side while the socket stays square on the fastener.
You can get a similar effect with a separate universal joint and regular sockets, but the stack is longer and floppier. Swivel (also called universal joint or flex) sockets keep the pivot close to the fastener, which is shorter, more stable and less likely to drop the socket.
The main choices are chrome hand sockets or impact-rated sockets, pinned or pinless joints, and SAE or metric. We compared seven current sets from Tekton, GearWrench and Sunex using manufacturer specs.

The Best Swivel Socket Sets, Reviewed
1. Tekton SID97200 21-Piece U-Joint Impact Set: Best Overall
Who it's for: anyone using a 3/8-inch impact or ratchet on angled fasteners in both SAE and metric.
Tekton covers 5/16" to 3/4" and 8 to 19 mm with no skipped sizes, all 6-point universal joint impact sockets. The joint rotates smoothly and continuously up to 30°, and retailer listings describe a 6-sided pinless joint, so there's no cross pin to shear under impact. Tekton says the joint ships pre-lubricated with synthetic grease.
The sockets are a reduced-height design that Tekton says is shorter than its standard impact sockets on U-joints, which helps them fit in tight areas. They come on organization rails with a tray. Because they're impact-rated, they also work on a hand ratchet, which makes this the most versatile set here.
Pros
- SAE and metric in one set, no skipped sizes
- Pinless joint rated for impact
- Reduced-height sockets for tight spots
Cons
- 30° maximum angle, less than hand-tool designs
- Heavier than chrome flex sockets

4. Tekton SHD91119 10-Piece U-Joint Set: Best Wide Angle
Who it's for: hand-tool users who need the sharpest possible angle to reach a fastener.
Tekton lists this hand-drive set's joint as rotating smoothly and continuously at up to 55°, nearly double its impact U-joint sockets. That extra angle can make the difference on bolts tucked behind a crossmember or deep in a transmission tunnel. The set covers 10 to 19 mm in shallow 6-point sockets on a rail.
The trade-off for that angle is that it's a chrome hand-tool set, not for impact use. Tekton also sells a 33-piece hand-drive U-joint set (SHD99301) covering 1/4- and 3/8-inch drive if you want SAE sizes too.
Pros
- Up to 55° joint angle
- 10 to 19 mm on a rail
- Shallow sockets keep the stack short
Cons
- Metric only
- Not impact rated

Swivel Socket Set Buying Guide
Swivel Socket vs Separate U-Joint
A separate universal joint works with any socket you own, but it adds length and a second pivot point. A swivel socket puts the pivot at the socket, so the setup is shorter and steadier. If you only meet angled fasteners occasionally, a single U-joint is fine. If it's a regular problem, buy a set.
Chrome or Impact
Chrome flex sockets are slimmer and lighter, good for hand ratchets. Impact universal sockets are thicker and built for impact tools, and they also work on hand ratchets. Never run chrome universal sockets on an impact; the joint and the socket can fail. See our impact socket set guide for more.
Joint Angle
More angle reaches more awkward bolts, but a steeper angle also means more wobble and less torque transfer. Tekton publishes its figures: up to 30° on its impact U-joint sockets, up to 55° on its hand-tool set. GearWrench and Sunex don't publish an angle on these pages.
Pinned or Pinless
Traditional universal joints pivot on a cross pin, which is a wear point on impact tools. Pinless designs, like Tekton's 6-sided joint and GearWrench's X-Core ball-and-socket joint, remove that pin. For impact use, pinless is worth looking for.
Socket Height
Adding a joint makes a socket taller. Tekton's reduced-height impact U-joint sockets offset some of that. If you need reach instead of compactness, long designs like the GearWrench 84980 work better.
Sizes
For metric cars, 10 to 19 mm covers most angled fasteners. For SAE, 3/8" to 3/4". Make sure your swivel set matches your main 3/8" drive socket set. If you need reach over long studs at an angle, deep universal sockets help; our deep socket set guide covers straight deep options.
Alternatives for Tight Spaces
Sometimes the better answer isn't a swivel. A pass-through socket set has a much thinner head for low-clearance spots, and a flex-head ratcheting wrench set reaches fasteners where even a swivel socket and ratchet won't fit.
Technique
Keep the angle as shallow as you can, especially when breaking a bolt loose. A steep angle can make the joint bind or jump, and on an impact tool it adds stress. Break the fastener loose straight on if possible, then switch to the swivel to spin it out.
How We Chose
We compared current swivel and universal joint socket sets from Tekton, GearWrench and Sunex using each manufacturer's published specs: every socket size, drive size, chrome or impact construction, joint design and maximum angle where published, socket length, storage and listed warranty. We favored gap-free size runs and pinless joints for impact use. We also considered recurring owner feedback, such as joints loosening or binding. We did not test these sets ourselves.
FAQ
What is a swivel socket used for?
Reaching fasteners you can't approach in a straight line, such as bolts behind an engine mount, under a manifold or at an angle on a transmission. The universal joint built into the socket lets the ratchet or impact sit off-axis while the socket stays square on the fastener.
Is a swivel socket better than a universal joint and regular socket?
Usually, yes. A swivel socket puts the joint right at the socket, so the stack is shorter and the socket is less likely to fall off or wobble. A separate universal joint is more flexible because it works with any socket, but it adds length.
Can I use swivel sockets on an impact wrench?
Only impact-rated ones. Chrome swivel sockets like the GearWrench 80565 and 80564 and Tekton SHD91119 are for hand tools. Impact universal sockets like the Tekton SID97200 and Sunex 3657 are built for impact use.
What does pinless mean on a universal socket?
Most universal joints use a cross pin as the pivot. Pinless designs replace the pin with a different joint shape, such as Tekton's 6-sided pinless joint or GearWrench's four-lug ball-and-socket X-Core design. Manufacturers say this improves durability on impact tools.
How far can a swivel socket bend?
It depends on the design. Tekton lists up to 30 degrees for its impact U-joint sockets and up to 55 degrees for its hand-tool U-joint sockets. Many manufacturers don't publish an angle at all.
Verdict
The Tekton SID97200 is the best swivel socket set for most people: SAE and metric 6-point impact U-joint sockets with a pinless joint, on rails, usable on both impacts and hand ratchets. For hand tools only, the GearWrench 80565 and 80564 cover metric and SAE in slim chrome, and the Tekton SHD91119 gives you the widest angle at up to 55°.
