Milwaukee came late to mechanics hand tools, and it built its lineup around one idea: everything clicks into PACKOUT. That's the main reason to buy a Milwaukee mechanic tool set, and also the main reason not to if you already own a tool chest full of drawers.

Our bottom line: the sockets and ratchets are genuinely good, with 90-tooth ratchets, 6-point sockets with anti-roll flats and a Lifetime Guarantee on the core tools. The 366-piece master kit is the most complete portable system you can buy off the shelf. But you pay a premium for the storage, and the ratchet tooth count trails some rivals.

Below, we break down each Milwaukee kit worth considering, what's actually inside, and which one fits your garage.

What Milwaukee Does Well (and Not So Well)

FOUR FLAT Sockets

Milwaukee's chrome sockets are 6-point inside, but the outside has four flat sides. The flats keep a socket from rolling off a fender or creeper, and they let you turn the socket with an open-end wrench when there's no room for a ratchet. It's a small idea that you notice daily. The downside: Milwaukee says its PACKOUT socket trays fit only FOUR FLAT sockets, so you can't fill the gaps with sockets from other brands.

90-Tooth Ratchets

Every Milwaukee ratchet in these kits uses a 90-tooth gear with 4° of arc swing, a slim head and a flush direction lever. That's a solid spec, on par with GearWrench's 90-tooth line, but behind DEWALT's 144-tooth TOUGHSERIES (2.5°) and Craftsman's 180-tooth OVERDRIVE ratchets. In practice, 4° is enough for nearly all engine-bay work.

Wrenches with MAX BITE

Milwaukee's combination wrenches use an open-end design it calls MAX BITE, which it says delivers up to 25% more torque than competing wrench designs, plus an I-beam handle and ink-filled size markings. The ratcheting combination wrenches have double-stacked pawls with 144 ratcheting positions and 2.5° of swing, finer than the classic 72-tooth GearWrench ratcheting wrench. We compare them head to head in our ratcheting wrench set guide.

Warranty

Milwaukee's Lifetime Guarantee covers ratchets, sockets, combination wrenches, picks, pry bars and hammers. PACKOUT boxes, screwdrivers, pliers, hex keys, adjustable wrenches, tape measures and utility knives carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty instead. It's a fair split, but read it before assuming every piece in the 366-piece kit gets the same treatment.

The Catch: Price per Piece

PACKOUT boxes are excellent, and they're part of what you're paying for. If you already own a rolling tool chest, a GearWrench or DEWALT kit gives you more sockets for the money. See our best mechanic tool set roundup for those alternatives.

Milwaukee Mechanic Tool Set Kits, Reviewed

1. Milwaukee 48-22-9495 366-Piece Master Mechanics Set: Best Complete System

Who it's for: mobile mechanics, fleet techs and serious home mechanics who want a lockable, rolling alternative to a tool chest.

The Milwaukee 366 piece kit is three complete sets stacked on a PACKOUT dolly. You get the 242-piece 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive ratchet and socket set (48-22-9491), the 60-piece combination wrench set (48-22-9492) and the 64-piece hand tool set (48-22-9493), each in its own PACKOUT 4-drawer tool box. Milwaukee lists the assembled stack at 48.6 in. tall, 22.2 in. wide and 16.3 in. deep; retailer listings put the weight around 174 lb.

The hand tool box is the part people overlook. It holds a 17-piece screwdriver and pry bar set, a 10-piece pliers and pick set, a 9-piece pliers and wrench set and a 28-piece hex key and hammer set. Milwaukee's description of the kit includes TORQUE LOCK locking pliers, long-reach pliers, snap ring pliers and a dead blow hammer. Combined with 60 wrenches and a full three-drive socket set, this is a genuine Milwaukee master mechanic kit, not a padded socket set.

Each drawer box has a locking security bar that takes a padlock, and the stack separates so you can carry only the box you need to a job.

Pros

  • Sockets, 60 wrenches and 64 hand tools in one system
  • Stackable, lockable PACKOUT drawers with EVA foam trays
  • Lifetime Guarantee on ratchets, sockets, wrenches, picks, pry bars and hammers

Cons

  • The most expensive way to buy this many tools
  • Around 174 lb fully loaded, per retailer listings
  • Foam trays fit Milwaukee's own sockets only

2. Milwaukee 48-22-9491 242-Piece Ratchet and Socket Set: Best Socket Set

Who it's for: anyone who wants full three-drive socket coverage and already owns wrenches.

This is the socket core of the 366-piece kit, sold on its own in a PACKOUT 4-drawer tool box. Milwaukee splits it across four foam trays: a 77-piece 1/4" and 3/8" drive tray with metric, SAE and Torx sockets, a 77-piece 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive metric tray, a 65-piece 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive SAE tray, and a 23-piece tray of ratchets and accessories.

Besides the 6-point FOUR FLAT chrome sockets, the set includes SHOCKWAVE Impact Duty sockets, slim bit sockets, magnetic spark plug sockets and extensions. If you already have PACKOUT drawer boxes, Milwaukee sells the same 242 pieces with trays only as the 48-22-9490.

Pros

  • Metric, SAE and Torx coverage in three drives
  • Includes impact-rated sockets, not just chrome
  • Trays-only version (48-22-9490) for existing PACKOUT drawers

Cons

  • No wrenches
  • Milwaukee doesn't publish an itemized size list for the 242-piece tray set online

3. Milwaukee 48-22-9492 60-Piece Combination Wrench Set: Best Wrench Kit

Who it's for: mechanics who want SAE and metric wrenches in both standard and ratcheting form without buying four separate sets.

Inside the PACKOUT 4-drawer box are four 15-piece sets, one per drawer: metric combination (48-22-0154), SAE combination (48-22-0155), metric ratcheting combination (48-22-0156) and SAE ratcheting combination (48-22-0157). The ratcheting wrenches have 144 positions and 2.5° of arc swing; all of them use the MAX BITE open end and I-beam handle.

Having both a static and a ratcheting wrench in the same size is more useful than it sounds. You can hold a nut with one and spin the bolt with the other, which is half of all suspension and exhaust work.

Pros

  • 30 static and 30 ratcheting wrenches
  • 2.5° swing on the ratcheting wrenches
  • Lifetime Guarantee on combination wrenches

Cons

  • Expensive compared with buying loose wrench sets
  • Milwaukee's page doesn't list individual sizes for the drawer trays

4. Milwaukee 48-22-9486 106-Piece Set: Best Mid-Size Kit

Who it's for: DIYers who do most of their work in the engine bay and want a Milwaukee hand tool set without committing to drawer boxes.

The 106 pieces are two standalone kits: the 50-piece 1/4" drive set (48-22-9004) and the 56-piece 3/8" drive set (48-22-9008), housed in a PACKOUT Low-Profile Organizer with a clear lid and an IP65 rating. The 1/4" set covers 5/32" to 9/16" and 5 to 15 mm, including 5.5 mm, in standard and deep. The 3/8" set covers 6 to 19 mm in standard and deep, plus SAE sizes up to 1" in standard length.

Both ratchets are 90-tooth with 4° of swing. Each socket set also has a removable inner tray designed to drop into a steel tool chest drawer later. On Amazon, the Milwaukee-branded listing for this kit uses part number 48-22-9486T and showed as unavailable when we checked in October 2026; several look-alike sets from other sellers use the 48-22-9486 number, so check the brand before you buy.

Pros

  • Standard and deep sockets in 1/4" and 3/8" drive
  • IP65 organizer that stacks with other PACKOUT gear
  • Removable trays for later tool chest storage

Cons

  • No 1/2" drive and no wrenches
  • Premium price for a 106-piece kit

5. Milwaukee 48-22-9487 47-Piece 1/2" Drive Set: Best 1/2" Drive Add-On

Who it's for: owners of the 106-piece kit, or any 1/4" and 3/8" set, who need lug-nut and suspension sizes.

The 48-22-9487 pairs Milwaukee's 47-piece 1/2" drive set (48-22-9010) with a PACKOUT Low-Profile Organizer. Milwaukee's contents list shows standard sockets from 1/2" to 1-1/8" and 10 to 24 mm, deep sockets from 1/2" to 15/16" and 10 to 19 mm, 3" and 5" extensions and a 90-tooth ratchet. That covers the metric sizes most cars use for wheels and brakes.

If you plan to use an impact wrench, buy impact-rated sockets instead; chrome sockets aren't designed for impact guns. Our impact socket set guide covers Milwaukee's SHOCKWAVE sets and alternatives.

Pros

  • Fills the 1/2" drive gap in smaller kits
  • Standard metric run from 10 to 24 mm without skipped sizes
  • Organizer stacks with the 106-piece kit

Cons

  • Deep sockets stop at 19 mm and 15/16"
  • Not for impact wrenches

6. Milwaukee 48-22-9485 30-Piece Combination Wrench Set: Best Budget Entry

Who it's for: anyone curious about Milwaukee's hand tools who wants the most useful single purchase.

This set includes 15 metric wrenches from 8 to 22 mm with no gaps, and 15 SAE wrenches from 1/4" to 1", in a PACKOUT Organizer. They're the static (non-ratcheting) version with the MAX BITE open end and I-beam handle. A complete 8 to 22 mm metric run is exactly what modern car work demands, and it pairs naturally with the 106-piece socket kit.

Pros

  • Gap-free 8 to 22 mm metric run
  • SAE from 1/4" to 1"
  • Lifetime Guarantee on combination wrenches

Cons

  • No ratcheting wrenches
  • The organizer is less convenient than a wrench rack in a drawer

Milwaukee vs GearWrench vs DEWALT

If you're weighing a Milwaukee mechanic tool set against the obvious rivals, here's the short version:

  • Against GearWrench: GearWrench's 243-piece 80966 gives you 6-point sockets and 6-point wrenches with 90-tooth ratchets in a 3-drawer box, without paying for PACKOUT storage. Milwaukee wins on storage and anti-roll sockets. See our GearWrench tool set review.
  • Against DEWALT: DEWALT's TOUGHSERIES kits have 144-tooth ratchets with 2.5° of swing, finer than Milwaukee's 4°. Milwaukee's kits are more modular and its wrench range is deeper.
  • Choose Milwaukee if: you already run PACKOUT, you move your tools between sites, or you want lockable storage without a chest.

How to Choose a Milwaukee Kit

Start with Your Storage

If you own PACKOUT, the trays-only 242-piece set (48-22-9490) or the organizer kits make the most sense. If you own a steel tool chest, Milwaukee's standalone sets like the 48-22-9008 and 48-22-9010 ship with removable trays sized for chest drawers.

Match Drives to Your Work

For car maintenance, 3/8" drive does the most work, 1/4" drive handles trim and sensors, and 1/2" drive handles wheels and suspension. The 106-piece kit plus the 47-piece 1/2" kit gives you all three drives, at the cost of the Torx, bit and impact sockets that come in the 242-piece box. Our socket size chart shows which sizes each drive typically covers.

Decide on Wrenches

The 30-piece set covers static wrenches; the 60-piece box adds ratcheting versions. If you only buy one, start with the 30-piece set and add ratcheting wrenches in the sizes you use most.

How We Chose

We built this review from Milwaukee's own product pages and contents lists for each kit, including model numbers, sub-kit part numbers, tooth counts, arc swing, dimensions and warranty language, and cross-checked the 366-piece kit's breakdown against retailer listings. We also considered recurring themes in owner feedback, such as tray fit and the premium price. We did not test these kits ourselves. Where Milwaukee doesn't publish a detail, such as full size lists for the drawer trays, we say so.

FAQ

What comes in the Milwaukee 366 piece set?

The 48-22-9495 combines three kits in PACKOUT 4-drawer boxes on a PACKOUT dolly: a 242-piece 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2-inch drive ratchet and socket set (48-22-9491), a 60-piece combination wrench set (48-22-9492) and a 64-piece hand tool set (48-22-9493) with screwdrivers, pry bars, pliers, picks, hex keys and hammers.

Is Milwaukee's hand tool warranty lifetime?

For most mechanics tools, yes. Milwaukee backs ratchets, sockets, combination wrenches, picks, pry bars and hammers with its Lifetime Guarantee. PACKOUT boxes, screwdrivers, pliers, hex keys and adjustable wrenches carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty instead, so the terms differ by item.

Are Milwaukee sockets 6-point?

Yes. Milwaukee's chrome sockets in these kits are 6-point with FOUR FLAT sides that stop them from rolling and let you turn them with a wrench. The larger kits also include SHOCKWAVE Impact Duty sockets for use on impact wrenches.

Will other brands' sockets fit Milwaukee's PACKOUT socket trays?

Not reliably. Milwaukee states that its socket storage trays fit only its FOUR FLAT sockets, because the cutouts are shaped for the flat sides. Round sockets from other brands may sit loosely or not at all.

Is the Milwaukee master mechanic set better than a tool chest full of tools?

It depends on how you work. The 366-piece set is portable, lockable and stackable, which suits mobile techs and small garages. A rolling tool chest holds more and opens faster at a fixed bench. If you never move your tools, a chest plus a separate set is usually more flexible.

Verdict

The Milwaukee 366-piece kit is the best all-in-one portable mechanics system on the market if you value lockable, stackable storage and can absorb the price. For most home garages, the smarter Milwaukee mechanic tool set is the 106-piece kit plus the 47-piece 1/2" drive add-on and the 30-piece wrench set, which covers the same core jobs for far less.
