Best Car Tool Sets for Beginners & DIYers

The first time you change your own oil or swap a battery, you find out what's missing from the junk drawer. A 10 mm socket. A deep socket for a nut on a long stud. A ratchet small enough to fit behind the radiator. A good car tool set solves all of that at once, for less than a couple of shop visits.

For beginners, the best car tool set isn't the biggest one. It's the one with complete metric coverage from 8 to 19 mm (where most modern car fasteners live), deep sockets, a 1/2-inch drive for wheels and suspension, and a ratchet with enough teeth to work in a crowded engine bay. Everything else is a bonus.

We narrowed the field to six kits that hit those marks at different budgets and sizes, using each manufacturer's published contents.

The Best Car Tool Sets, Reviewed

1. GearWrench GW90MCBMTS 185-Piece Set: Best Overall

Who it's for: a first-time DIYer who wants one auto tool set that will still be useful five years from now.

This is the set we'd hand a new car owner. GearWrench lists 61 shallow and 47 deep sockets across 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive, all 6-point, with a range of 5/32" to 1" and 4 to 24 mm. That means the 1/2" drive covers common lug nut sizes, and the deep sockets reach nuts on long studs, like exhaust and strut hardware.

The three ratchets are 90-tooth with a 4° swing arc, a low-profile teardrop head and a flush-mounted direction switch, which matters when you're reaching behind an engine cover. You also get two spark plug sockets, three extensions, two adapters, six combination wrenches and a magnetic bit driver with 60 S2-steel bits. It ships in a blow-molded case, weighs 26 lb, and GearWrench backs it with a full lifetime warranty.

Pros

  • Three drives with 6-point standard and deep sockets
  • 90-tooth ratchets with a slim head
  • Metric coverage to 24 mm, including 1/2" drive
  • Full lifetime warranty per GearWrench

Cons

  • Only six combination wrenches
  • Blow-molded case gets crowded once you add tools

2. DEWALT DWMT81534 205-Piece Set: Most Tools for the Money

Who it's for: DIYers who want sockets, wrenches, hex keys and bits in one case and don't mind a 72-tooth ratchet.

DEWALT publishes the full contents, which we appreciate. In 1/4" drive you get 22 standard and 20 deep 6-point sockets (5/32" to 9/16", 4 to 14 mm). In 3/8" drive, 22 standard and 22 deep sockets (1/4" to 7/8", 10 to 19 mm plus 21 mm). In 1/2" drive, 18 standard sockets from 1/2" to 1" and 12 to 22 mm. Add 10 combination wrenches, 28 hex keys, two spark plug sockets (5/8" and 13/16"), 18 nut bits, 33 specialty bits and a bit driver.

The ratchets are 72-tooth with a 5° swing, a step behind the 90-tooth GearWrench, and there are a few holes worth knowing: the 3/8" metric run skips 20 mm, the 1/2" metric run skips 16 and 20 mm, and the metric wrenches are 10, 12, 13, 14 and 15 mm only. One more note: DEWALT's product page lists a 1-year limited warranty for this set, unlike its lifetime-warranty sets, so check the packaging terms.

Pros

  • Deep sockets in both 1/4" and 3/8" drive
  • 10 wrenches plus nut bits and specialty bits
  • Durable case with metal latches

Cons

  • 72-tooth ratchets need more swing
  • Skips 20 mm in 3/8" drive, and 16 and 20 mm in 1/2" drive
  • Warranty listed as 1-year limited on DEWALT's page

3. Craftsman CMMT12024 135-Piece Set: Best Budget

Who it's for: someone who wants a complete-enough car tool set for the first oil change, battery swap and tire rotation without spending much.

The CMMT12024 covers the basics with three 72-tooth ratchets (5° swing) and 6-point sockets in 1/4" and 3/8" drive. Craftsman's contents list runs 5/32" to 1/2" and 4 to 12 mm in 1/4" drive, and 1/4" to 13/16" plus 8 and 10 to 19 mm in 3/8" drive, with SAE and metric deep sockets in both drives.

The 1/2" drive sockets are 12-point (3/8" to 7/8", 14 to 19 mm, 21 and 22 mm), which is the main compromise: 12-point sockets are more likely to slip on a rusty lug or suspension nut. You get eight combination wrenches (3/8" to 9/16", 10 to 13 mm), two spark plug sockets and a blow-molded case that Craftsman designed to fit its metal tool boxes. Craftsman lists a full lifetime warranty.

Pros

  • Three drives at a budget price
  • Deep sockets in SAE and metric
  • Full lifetime warranty per Craftsman

Cons

  • 1/2" drive sockets are 12-point
  • 3/8" metric skips 9 mm; wrenches stop at 13 mm

4. Craftsman OVERDRIVE CMMT99121L 121-Piece Set: Best Ratchet Upgrade

Who it's for: beginners who'd rather have fewer, better tools, especially a ratchet that works in tight quarters.

The headline is the 180-tooth ratchet, a far finer count than most entry-level kits. Craftsman pairs it with its Tight Torque socket design, which it says helps prevent rounding on common automotive fasteners, and long-panel wrenches for extra leverage. The finish is a gunmetal chrome.

Craftsman breaks the kit into 56 sockets, three ratchets in 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" drive, 10 wrenches, 16 hex keys, 30 specialty bits and six accessories, with a full lifetime warranty. The drawback is that Craftsman doesn't publish the individual socket sizes on its site, so check the size chart on the box or listing photos before you buy.

Pros

  • 180-tooth ratchets in three drives
  • 10 wrenches, more than most beginner sets
  • Full lifetime warranty per Craftsman

Cons

  • Individual socket sizes not published online
  • Fewer sockets than similarly priced kits

5. GearWrench GW90SCBMTS 121-Piece Set: Best Compact Kit

Who it's for: apartment dwellers, second-car owners and anyone who wants a capable trunk kit.

This is the two-drive sibling of our top pick. GearWrench lists two 90-tooth ratchets (1/4" and 3/8"), 40 shallow and 36 deep 6-point sockets from 5/32" to 3/4" and 4 to 19 mm, two spark plug sockets, six combination wrenches, two extensions, two adapters and a bit driver with 30 bits. At 13.7 lb, it's about half the weight of the 185-piece set.

The catch is the missing 1/2" drive. You can handle most under-hood work with 3/8", but lug nuts and suspension bolts are better served by a 1/2" breaker bar or an impact socket set with a cordless impact wrench.

Pros

  • 90-tooth ratchets and 6-point sockets
  • Standard and deep sockets to 19 mm and 3/4"
  • Light enough to keep in a trunk

Cons

  • No 1/2" drive
  • Six wrenches only

6. Milwaukee 48-22-9486 106-Piece Set: Best for PACKOUT Users

Who it's for: people already running Milwaukee PACKOUT boxes who want their socket set to click into the same stack.

The 48-22-9486 combines Milwaukee's 50-piece 1/4" drive set (48-22-9004) and 56-piece 3/8" drive set (48-22-9008) in a PACKOUT Low-Profile Organizer with an IP65 rating and a clear lid. Both ratchets are 90-tooth with 4° of swing and a slim head. The sockets have Milwaukee's FOUR FLAT sides, so they don't roll off a fender and can be turned with a wrench when a ratchet won't fit.

Coverage is solid for car work: the 1/4" set runs 5/32" to 9/16" and 5 to 15 mm (including 5.5 mm), and the 3/8" set covers 6 to 19 mm in standard and deep. There are no wrenches and no 1/2" drive, so treat this as a socket core rather than a complete kit. Milwaukee backs the sockets and ratchets with its Lifetime Guarantee. On Amazon, the Milwaukee-branded listing for this kit uses part number 48-22-9486T and showed as unavailable when we checked in October 2026; several look-alike sets from other sellers use the 48-22-9486 number, so check the brand before you buy.

Pros

  • Integrates with the PACKOUT storage system
  • FOUR FLAT anti-roll sockets
  • 90-tooth ratchets in both drives

Cons

  • No wrenches, no 1/2" drive
  • Premium price per piece

Car Tool Set Buying Guide

Metric Coverage Matters Most

Most modern cars, including those from American brands, are built largely with metric fasteners. Before buying, check that the set covers 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17 and 19 mm in 3/8" drive with no gaps. Skipped sizes like 16 or 20 mm aren't deal-breakers, but they're worth knowing about. Our socket size chart explains why you can't substitute SAE for most of these, and our SAE vs metric guide covers when SAE still matters.

Get a 1/2-Inch Drive (or Plan for One)

Lug nuts, axle nuts and suspension bolts need leverage and larger sockets. Three-drive kits like the GW90MCBMTS and DWMT81534 include 1/2" drive. If you choose a two-drive kit, add a 1/2" breaker bar and sockets, or a cordless impact wrench with impact sockets.

6-Point Sockets for Rusty Fasteners

A 6-point socket grips the flats of a nut instead of the corners, so it's less likely to round off a seized bolt. Most sets here are 6-point throughout; the Craftsman CMMT12024's 1/2" drive sockets are the exception.

Ratchet Tooth Count

More teeth means a smaller swing to engage the next tooth: 5° for 72-tooth, 4° for 90-tooth and 2° for a 180-tooth design on a single-pawl mechanism. In a cramped engine bay, that's the difference between turning a bolt and fighting it.

Wrenches, Bits and Padding

Bits and hex keys inflate piece counts. A beginner set should still include at least a handful of combination wrenches in 10, 12, 13 and 14 mm. If yours only has a few, a dedicated wrench set is the best next purchase.

What a Car Tool Set Won't Include

None of these kits include a torque wrench, floor jack or jack stands. You'll want a torque wrench to tighten wheels and brake parts to the values in your owner's or service manual, and jack stands rated for your vehicle's weight before you ever get under it. Our mechanic tools list covers the rest of a beginner's shopping list.

How We Chose

We compared current beginner and mid-size mechanics sets from GearWrench, DEWALT, Craftsman and Milwaukee using each manufacturer's published contents: socket sizes and point count, drive sizes, ratchet tooth count, number of wrenches, case type, weight and listed warranty. We weighted complete metric coverage and 1/2" drive heavily because those are what beginners run short of first, and we looked at recurring owner complaints such as skipped sizes and weak cases. We did not test these sets ourselves; where a brand doesn't publish a spec, we say so.

FAQ

What is the best auto tool set for a beginner?

A three-drive set (1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch) with 6-point metric sockets from at least 8 to 19 mm, deep sockets, spark plug sockets and a few combination wrenches. Our top pick, the GearWrench GW90MCBMTS, covers 4 to 24 mm and 5/32 to 1 inch with 90-tooth ratchets.

What tools do I need for basic car maintenance?

A 3/8-inch drive ratchet with metric sockets handles most under-hood jobs. Add a 1/2-inch drive for lug nuts and suspension, a few combination wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, a torque wrench for wheels and brakes, and a floor jack with jack stands rated for your vehicle.

Should I buy an SAE or metric car tool set?

Buy a set with both, but make sure the metric side is complete. Most modern cars, including domestic brands, are largely metric. SAE sizes still matter for older American vehicles, trailers, lawn equipment and household hardware.

Are all-in-one household tool sets good for working on cars?

Usually not. General tools tool sets with a hammer, tape measure and screwdrivers tend to include only a small 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch socket assortment and rarely any 1/2-inch drive or deep sockets. For car work, buy a mechanics tool set and add household tools separately.

Can I do a brake job with a basic car tool set?

Often yes for the fasteners, since caliper and bracket bolts commonly fall in the 13 to 19 mm range on many cars. You'll also need a torque wrench to tighten them to the specification in your service manual, plus a way to compress the caliper piston and proper jack stands.

Verdict

The GearWrench GW90MCBMTS is the car tool set we'd recommend to most beginners: three drives, 90-tooth ratchets and 6-point sockets from 4 to 24 mm, with a lifetime warranty. On a tighter budget, the Craftsman CMMT12024 covers the essentials. If you outgrow either, our best mechanic tool set guide covers the bigger kits with drawer boxes and full wrench runs.
